APRIL 20th CML & MS meeting

S thru Z bring refreshments

The April meeting of the Central Michigan Lapidary & Mineral Society will be about Glaciers, How They Work, and What They Leave for Us. For the past 800 million years, the Earth has been in and out of Ice Ages, in which thick ice has spread from the Poles to cover a large percentage of the Earth's surface. Each Ice Age includes several cold periods in which the ice advances (Glacial periods) and warmer periods in which the ice melts back (Interglacial periods). We have been in an Interglacial for the past 10,000 years or so, and are overdue for the start of the next Glacial period. Glaciers are huge piles of snow that compress into ice, and then spread out. As they move, they pick up big chunks of rock and grind them up into boulders, gravel and sand. When the ice melts, some of the water sinks into the ground and gives us "fossil water aquifers", which are used to irrigate a lot of the Great Plains and grow our food.

Michigan still had some glacial ice as recently as 7,000 years ago. Just about all the rocks, gravel, sand, clay and soil that Michigan has is a gift from the glaciers. The hills around us are glacial dumps, and the flat fields are old glacial lakes that have gradually dried up over the past 7,000 years. The Great Lakes are old river valleys that have been dug out by repeated glaciers in the past million years or so.

We'll look at slides of the remaining mountain glaciers in Switzerland, Canada, and Alaska, and have exhibits with maps, photographs, and rocks. The fossil of the month is the Petosky Stone (which the glaciers dug up and left on our lake shores); the mineral of the month is a surprise (but definitely glacier-related).

Join us for this program, and bring any rocks you have that have been rounded and ground down by the glaciers, or pictures of glacial landforms.

The editors had a great time in Nevada and California. They visited the Salton Sea, Quartzsite, a great Rock Shop in Palo Verde , had two visits to a Tourmaline mine, a visit to a Borax mine and a drive through Rainbow Basin. They sent or brought back Tourmaline, Aquamarine, Pyrite, Petrified Wood and Ulexite plus others. They also visited several Nature Centers and Gardens. The one Lee liked best was a visit to a Chocolate Factory.Yum Yum.

Because no one else sent any thing for the newsletter and in the interest of getting it in the mail before the meeting this is all the is.
