MAY 18TH CML & MS meeting
A thru J bring refreshments

The May 18 program for the Central Michigan Lapidary & Mineral Society meeting will focus on stone tools and materials. We'll look at: 1) the uses for stone tools, since form follows function; 2) the materials used to make stone tools, which often required compromises between the use of the tool and the difficulty of finding and working with the raw materials; 3) manufacturing techniques for stone tools, and 4) other things that were made with those same manufacturing tools. There will be a slide presentation, exhibits, and examples. If you have stone tools or other stone artifacts (such as beads and pipes) in your collection, please bring them (in a viewing case, please). Also, if you have examples of stone tool raw materials, such as varieties of flint, quartzite, soapstone, catlinite, basalt, or fine-grained granite, please bring them for exhibit. Stone tool making was the technology that kept our ancestors fed and safe for the past five million years, and it includes a lot more than just arrowheads. Join us for this look at how simple hand axes developed into a complex tool kit.

Show Report:

As we approach summer break we need to remember Show time comes very soon after we return in September. Allan has Show flyers for members to take and distribute. He will also bring the show floor lay out for viewing. Ernie has received positive response from all of the Dealers we invited. Elaine said she will have more prizes for the “Wheel” and that she acquired some interesting specimens for the Silent Auction . Club members need to work on the “Rock Pile” in my back yard to sort into flats or crates for show sales. We must also schedule one or two work days to complete the Exit Gifts , put together Petoskey Stone Polish Kits, price material and reload the Trailer. Lila also asks for help filling Egg Cartons , which day/s must be scheduled with her. Also needed is a volunteer or volunteers to supervise the Club Raffle at the Show. See me if you will take on this Job. Happy Collecting . OH don’t forget the Pebble Pond. Roger Laylin- Show Chairman.

HUMOR CAN BRIGHTEN A DAY

By Bob Carlson AFMS President—Elect

One flung that I have learned about Rockhounds is that they have a sense of humor -- sometimes strange! Without exception. I have never attended a Rockhound function where the mood was not festive. Oh, there are sometimes disagreements. but - are always settled amicably. Rockhounds are friendly and fun loving. Speaking of fun. I’ll bet we all have stories to tell that will amuse almost any listener. I have one that I would like to share with you. It was in 1987, when the AFMS donated the “American Golden topaz to the Smithsonian Institution A friend and I went to Washington. DC for the presentation. We flew economy class~ and as a result had to stay a week . To fill the week, as rockhounds will do, after the dedication ceremony we went rockhounding.

After a brief unsuccessful stint at digging at local locations, we decided to go to Franklin. New Jersey. After a fruitless search through the mine tailings we visited some of the old miners who had specimens for sale . We bought plenty.

When it was as time for us to fly back to the state of Washington. where I lived at the time, we had quite a load of specimens. We boxed them carefully and stayed within the limit of checked articles that the airline had at the time. Our flight home was scheduled for Mother’s Day, and we got to the airport ear1y in the morning. We managed to get our parcels to the weight scale with the grudging help of the local baggage handlers. The lady behind the counter, checking passengers in. didn’t appear to like the idea of having to work the “Mother’s Day shift.” When we started loading our luggage onto the scale (and she had to lift them and put them onto the conveyor belt), she said. “what have you got in there? Rocks?’ When we said “yes”. she brightened to the point that I think our response made her whole day

To me. it was an amusing anecdote. We need more of these in our communications. Humor. however strange. helps us bond -- with ourselves, and with others.

HUBBA HUBBA FOR JOE SCHMOE!

When was the last time someone in your club was recognized for contributions to the club? It’s mid-March. and I have only seven “AFMS Club Rockhounds of the Year” for 2006. That averages out to one per federation (though two federations actually have no submissions). Is there only one person in your federation (How about your club?) who deserves to be thanked? I don’t think so!!!

Send this information to your federation representative. Do it now. Everyone submitted will have their information printed in their regional federation newsletter and the AFMS newsletter. They will also have their name on the list as part of the AFMS convention record. It is a special way to show everyone how important these people are.

Cathy Gaber, Club Rockhound of the Year (Eastern Federation)

From AFMS Newsletter. May 2006

(Editor Rog notes that we haven’t made such a recognition of a club member in a long time!
