The
May 17th program will be by our own Alan Hukill, Alan will be
talking about the fascinating hobby of faceting. There will also be a mini
auction if enough people bring things to have one.
It is with great sadness that we report the
death of long time member Connie Snepp.
Connie died peacefully in her sleep April
29th. I asked her good friend Lila Stevens to send me some thing to
put in the newsletter.
“ Dear Connie, You are missed. What adventures we have had together! I
remember seeing your head pop over the top a pile of dirt in a quarry in
Florida.
You had just found a big sea urchin.
And a long Turretilla snail you found on a road gravel pile. We also had our
trying times of no fossils, in Illinois all we got were ticks,
in
Indiana at a road cut it just poured rain. I went to the car, but you, Neil And
Rich kept looking. I don’t remember if you found any thing. South Dakota was a
challenge,
but
we looked. I’ll never forget your joy when you were able to add another
trilobite
to
your extensive collection. Thank you for all the good times and your patience
in helping me identify a find when I was to lazy to look it up for myself. I’ll
see you and Rich later at that Happy Hunting Ground in the sky. Gratefully,
Lila

with e-mail will have noted that you did not receive your April newsletter by
e-mail. The editors are working on the problem and you may or may not receive
the May newsletter by e-mail.

We are scheduled for a field trip to the
Lafarge Quarry, Alpena, Michigan on the 2nd of June. Our tour guide is Don
Oliver of the Lafarge Corporation. We will met Don at the main gate at 9:00
a.m. (to 1 p.m.) and be given a briefing and required equipment needed to
enter the quarry. Don Oliver is a Geologist that has over 44 years in the
business. The quarry is almost 200 feet deep, a mile and a half across, and has
been in operation since 1907. Some types of fossils collected at this location
will be Strophodonta - Atrypa - and Mucrospirifer Brachiopods; Hexagonaria
(Petoskey Stone); Rugose Coral (Horn Coral); Favosites, Bryozoa; Trilobites (if
you're lucky); Gastropods; Algae; and Blastoids all from the Devonian time.
From Lansing, it is about four hours, more directions will follow at the
scheduled club meeting. Daniel E. Sine
Note
from Librarian: If you have books out please return them at the May meeting, as
the library will be moving to the Laylin garage for the summer. Thank You.
Come Join Us for the CMLMS Annual Banquet and 50th
Anniversary Celebration!
-- The Central Michigan Lapidary and Mineral Society is 50 years old this
month, and we will celebrate in June at the CMLMS Annual Banquet. Our
celebration will be held at the Masonic Hall on Hamilton St. in Okemos starting
at 5:30 pm on Thursday, June 21st.
-- We will have a great meal, a custom-made 50th anniversary cake, and a
special speaker -- Prof. Ralph Taggart, Chair of the Geology Department at
Michigan State University. Prof. Taggart will give his talk on the dinosaur
extinction of 65 million years BP. If you have dinosaur fossils (bones, teeth,
eggs, coprolites, etc.) please bring them in a case to exhibit; plant fossils
also are welcome. Other exhibits will include CMLMS mineral collections, and
informative exhibits related to Dr. Taggart's talk (please contact Dan Sine if
you have items to exhibit).
-- There will be a remembrance of CMLMS times past (if you have photographs
of field trips and CMLMS gatherings, please bring them), and the ever-popular
door prizes. As always, we ask everyone to bring a good appetizer for the
Hospitality Table. Please contact Ernie Augenbaugh for tickets ($10 for adults,
$4 for children), which also will be available at the CMLMS monthly meeting on
May 17, 2007 at the North School in Lansing.
This 50th anniversary is a
very special event.
Don't miss this celebration -- it will be 50 more years until the next one!
