Come Join Us for the CMLMS Annual Banquet and 50th Anniversary
Celebration!
-- The Central Michigan Lapidary and Mineral Society is 50 years old this
month, and we will celebrate in June at the CMLMS Annual Banquet. Our
celebration will be held at the Masonic Hall on Hamilton St. in Okemos starting
at 5:30 pm on Thursday, June 21st.
-- We will have a great meal, a custom-made 50th anniversary cake, and a
special speaker -- Prof. Ralph Taggart, Chair of the Geology Department at
Michigan State University. Prof. Taggart will give his talk on the dinosaur
extinction of 65 million years BP. If you have dinosaur fossils (bones, teeth,
eggs, coprolites, etc.) please bring them in a case to exhibit; plant fossils
also are welcome. Other exhibits will include CMLMS mineral collections, and
informative exhibits related to Dr. Taggart's talk (please contact Ernie
Augenbaugh if youhave items to exhibit).
-- There will be a remembrance of CMLMS times past (if you have
photographs of field trips and CMLMS gatherings, please bring them), and the
ever-popular door prizes. As always, we ask everyone to bring a good appetizer
for the Hospitality Table. Mail Ernie Augenbaugh at P.O. Box 67, St.Johns, MI
48879-0067 for tickets ($10 for adults, $4 for children), ,
This 50th
anniversary is a very special event.

Notes from the field and
about the field
LaFarge Quarry, Alpena
A
bright sunny morning greeted 15 Club
members in the Cement plant parking
area Sat. Morning. Part of the group had arrived that morning
having left Lansing about 4;30 A.M.
The others came up Fri. and were not faced with such a long day.
Unfortunately
the Plant Guide did not arrive at the Quarry until 10A.M. We then had a orientation and explanation of the process of converting
limestone rocks into concrete also a short tour of the Building with a chance
to see the robot Jenny take
samples to insure a proper mix of
ingredients.
We
drove into the Quarry about 11 A.M. And
after gaping at the size of the hole began to collect. It is no problem to find fossils as the
formations being mined are virtually made up of fossil material. The trick is to find ones that are not
broken or that are small enough to pick up and carry without help. I of course chose a Petoskey Head that required assistance and moves much
easier on a hand cart. I saw that Chris
had John struggle with several that could not be left behind. Chuck had to drive to the pile that he
picked out. I didn’t see any cars that
dragged bottom but they all left heavily loaded, some of
which I suspect will end up on the children’s table. Besides Petoskey heads we
came away with favocities, brachiopods , crinoid stems and a few calyx’s some
horned coral , fish fossil pieces and various other goodies I didn’t see it all.
We
left the Quarry about 4 P.M. after being threatened with a rain shower. George
we didn’t need you
because the shower went around.
Several of the group met at the Big Boy for a late lunch - early supper
and review of the days work before heading home.
Respectfully Submitted Roger Laylin. Thanks Dan !!
Coming Field Trips
We
are invited to join Tulip City Gem and Mineral Club on their next two trips.
1. To Paulding O. , Lafarge Quarry ; Fossils ,
trilobites, brachiopods, horn coral. crinoid
stems & Petoskey . The date
of this trip will be determined when
Bob Sherwood learns of the
next BLAST! Possibly 6/23 or one of the following Saturdays. I will know by
our meeting.
2,
To Anderson Ind, Irving Materials , Pendleton Quarry on July 14th ; Honey or Yellow and Iridescent
Calcite and Marcasite crystals.
Full
safety equipment is required for both
Quarry’s. Further details will
be provided to you who express interest in going . If you are not going to be
at the dinner, call Roger 349-3249
If
you are interested in either trip.
A
CLUB THANK YOU to Roland Robbins L.M.
for a large bucket of tumbled stones
for the children’s table. Roland
was successful in selling his saw and other equipment.
