REFRESHMENTS: Last names A through M - Please Bring Goodies
It’s Show Time!
At the June meeting, July work-party, and September work-party, we made lots of things for the Show -- especially for the Children’s Tour. We made Exit Gifts, Petoskey Stone Polishing Kits, Rock Critters, Mineralogy Sample Kits; and unloaded, checked, and re-loaded the fossils and minerals in the trailer. Lots of folks brought stones for the Pebble Pond and Children’s Table. At the September meeting, some people signed up for Show duties, but there are still lots of good slots open! If you like having the CMLMS Show, do more than just attend it. Come to the 10/15 meeting and sign up to HELP!!!
Location & Time: The CMLMS October Meeting will be held at 7:30 pm at the North School, 333 E. Miller Rd, Lansing, MI. Please get there a little early to help set up the tables.

Member Displays -- One of the important features of any show are the display cases that the club members and nonmembers bring to the Show to show off their collections or skills. Viewing these displays gives visitors and club members the opportunity to see mineral specimens and fossils they have never before seen. This is where learning begins and inspiration for new collections starts. If you have not yet told Neil Snepp that you will have a display for the show, please give him the completed form below, or call him.
OFFICIAL “YES, NEIL, I CAN HELP YOU WITH A DISPLAY” FORM
You can count on _________________________________(name) to bring a display to the show.
I will bring: _____standard club case(s) ____pony case(s) _____faceting case(s).
I will bring something else; please draw a rough sketch on the back of this form.
______Hey, I want to borrow a case.
______________________________(name) can't display this year, but would be glad to let someone else use my case. Describe case or cases on the back side of this form.

Hospitality
Requests -- Jean Ann Wahl-Piotrowski
Getting
away from the show for nourishment just isn't possible for our
dealers and the club folks who put in a full day working to make our
show a success. Thus we try to keep everyone happy and healthy with
our club hospitality. I need your help with the snack portion of the
menu: salty snacks (like chips, pretzels, crackers), sweet snacks
(like cookies, quick breads, muffins) and healthy snacks (like fruit,
veggies, cheese). If you can contribute a snack to sustain the show
crew, please bring it to Thursday set up, or any day of the show.
Thanks to Marvin Oesterle, who has volunteered a Dorm refrigerator;
this will be a great help, since the facility has no refrigeration.
If you have questions or suggestions, please give me a call
269-948-9589 or e-mail jawp2@voyager.net.
Thanks
and see you at the show!!!
2009 CMLMS Show Raffle -- Drawing at 4 PM, Sunday, October 25
Prize Items Are Needed for the Raffle! --- A number of members have donated some very nice Raffle Prize items for this year's Raffle. However, more items are needed to raise the chance to win. Prizes may be donated between now and the show. Please contact Kris Wood. Thank you for your support!
Raffle Tickets are available. They are $1 each or 6 for $5. . The chance of winning is much greater at our raffle than with most games of chance and sales help support the CMLMS Geology scholarship at MSU. Remember your friends, relatives & neighbors may wish to purchase tickets too. Why not sell some tickets to them and help a good cause at the same time?
Your help is needed to sell raffle tickets at the show. Please see Kris Wood at the October 15 CMLMS meeting, or give her a call to reserve your time. Last year, Marvin Martin was our champion raffle ticket seller at the Show and we SOLD OUT! See if you can beat his record.
Tickets don’t sell themselves!!
OTHER Show Stuff: What you can do to help out!
Spread the word. Tell your friends and enemies. Post a flier.
Pitch in and work! Those who work two hours earn free admission to the Show.
Invite friends to help on Friday morning. We have never had too much help for the Children’s Tour.

Remember that the Show Committee will be enforcing the rule that in order to have free admission to the show, a member must put in at least 2 hours at some show duty, enter a display, or demonstrate a lapidary skill. The club hospitality & break area at the show is intended for use by the actively working club members and the dealers.

Roster Secretary
Message from Roster Secretary Ernie Aughenbaugh: Dues are now being collected for 2010.
From Neil Snepp, who spoke at the funeral for Joseph Manina, a tribute: When I joined CMLMS about 40 years ago, Joe was willing to share his knowledge and always was patient with us beginners. Joe was a master of faceting, but his knowledge went far beyond that field. He was also a man of strong opinions and we did not always agree, but each of us respected the right of the other to his own view. Joe had a strong work ethic and believed in giving full measure to any task he was asked to complete. He was also a man of honesty and integrity; if he said he would do something, you could depend on it – but if he said no, that meant no. Joe was proud of his heritage, loved his family and his country. I was proud to call him my friend. I will miss him but I know this parting will be temporary. Rest in peace, Joe.
On Sept. 19, President Milt Gere arranged a local field trip to Crandell Brothers Trucking Company sand and gravel pit on M-50 east of Charlotte. Nearly 20 CMLMS members turned out to see what could be found for the Pebble Pond, and their own collections. Mr. Crandell is willing to invite us back again, and everyone is encouraged to join the next CMLMS expedition to this interesting site.
CMLMS thanks Pamela Hahn, daughter of Betty Patterson (CMLMS Past President and longtime member), for her donation of many fluorescent mineral specimens and other display items. Thanks, Pamela for remembering CMLMS; your contributions will be put to good use!
Please send any newsletter items to Elaine Beane at (gebeane@comcast.net). The deadline for each issue is five days after the monthly Board meeting.
Things To Do and Places To Go
November 2, 2009 -- Doug Sjoquist announces that CMLMS members are cordially invited to attend a reception for Ron and Agnes Thill who recently donated an extensive, beautiful, and valuable mineral collection to Lansing Community College. Many of the minerals will be displayed at the reception. The reception will be held on Monday, November 2, from 4:30 to 6:00 pm in the Hermann Conference Center (Capitol Avenue near Dart Auditorium) on the campus of LCC. If you have questions, please contact Doug at sjoquid@lcc.edu.

President Milt Geer called the meeting to order at 7:10 p.m. at the Okemos Library.
Vice President: Rone Siokakides announced that the September meeting would be Show & Tell and a mini auction. The recipient of the CMLMS-MSU scholarship will be the speaker at the October meeting.
Recording Secretary Sue Casler was absent.
Corresponding Secretary Mary Ann reported that a card was sent to Joe Manina and his family.
Treasurer’s Report: Kris Wood gave the report through the end of August. Elaine Beane made a motion to put the expiring CD funds into an 18-month CD. Kris seconded. Motion passed.
Directors: 3-year Mary Gowans no report. 2-year Robert Mosher passed out to all Board Members the directions for making a hat out of newspaper, useful during work sessions. 1-year George Heaton announced that he has reserved the Okemos Library through June for Board Meetings.
Publications: Elaine asked that any articles for the newsletter be sent by Tuesday, September 8.
Library: Roger presented, in Lee’s absence, a book that Lee wants to purchase for the library and for any member who would like one.
Show: Roger is getting the lottery number and has emailed Jean Ann about doing the hospitality room. He also announced that the date for loading the trailer would be right before the show. Mary Gowans reported that 60 letters were sent to teachers.
Webmaster Lyle is making changes to the website so that members can send email to a webpage.
Old Business: At the June Board meeting, Neil Snepp proposed a By-Laws change to make a $50 donation to the American Federation or Midwest Federation rather than purchasing a book or a rock/mineral/fossil specimen as a memorial. A copy of the By-Laws amendment was distributed. Elaine Beane suggested that the amendment needs to be put into the By-Laws format, and volunteered to do this. The Board will vote at a later meeting. Board approved.
New Business: Lyle inquired if the Board was interested in looking into buying a building for the club during the current housing market downturn. Much discussion followed, but it was agreed that the club does not have sufficient funds or membership to purchase or maintain a building. As an alternative, Mary Ann suggested looking into use of a building owned by the Lansing Parks Department. She will gather more information.
Milt announced that he had more flyers about the Hartland and Livingston shows.
Elaine moved to adjourn at 8:15 p.m. George Heaton seconded. Motion passed.
Respectfully submitted, Mary Gowans, Recording Secretary pro tempore
