Attendance is up for the 2007 CMLMS
Annual Gem and Mineral Show!
Thanks
to all of the CMLMS members, volunteers, and friends who gave their time and
energy during the three days of the 2007 Gem and Mineral Show at the Ingham
County Fairgrounds Main Arena. After Thursday (October 25) set up, the show
opened on Friday (October 26) at 9 am with the Children’s Tour. That was an
exciting four hours, with attendance by 1175 children and about 250 teachers
and chaperones [a total of 1425, about 350 more than 2006]. Due to both early
and late arrivals, we had about a third of our total attendance on the floor
for most of a very busy hour! Our many members and volunteers were essential;
they helped to keep all those children, teachers, and parents busy, happy,
safe, and reasonably organized. At 1 pm, with the last child safely on the
correct bus, the set-up was changed and the dealers moved in so that the public
show could open from 6-9 pm, plus Saturday and Sunday.
We
had paid attendance of 1136 over the three days, an improvement of over 100
compared to 2006. The Silent Auction and Spinning Wheel had their best years
ever, and there were always crowds around the dealers’ tables, the
demonstrators, the displays, Children’s Tables and the Petoskey Stone Polishing
table. The Raffle had extra donations from the dealers (kudos to Ernie) and
ticket sales were good. A special thank you to the tireless crew who kept the
members, volunteers, and dealers well fed during the show. There were at least
three member photographers documenting the show, so there should be lots of
photos for sharing at the membership meeting on November 15. --- Come and see how
gorgeous and handsome we all looked at the show, and plan to join us for next
year’s fun and games!!!
President Elaine Beane.
SHOW REPORTS AND NEWS
THANK YOU !!!
All
of the members who took an active part in making this 42nd Show a success
deserve our thanks. Mary Gowans, Children’s Tour Chairwoman, rates an EXCELLENT
for her diligent efforts in contacting teachers and arranging the schedule for
the 1200 + - students and the accompanying 216
parents and teachers. Surely their attendance and enjoyment of Friday
morning made the efforts by members and volunteers worthwhile. The teaching material we received from
Mineral Information Institute, which was given to the Teachers and Schools,
both surprised and pleased the Teachers.
Show attendance was up slightly over prior years level. The free
pass as a part of the children’s gift again returned more parents and children
than prior years. We were pleased to welcome the new Dealers Tim and Joyann
Sabo “Fantasy Gem Design “ and David
and Janett Corn “Janga Gems”. Unfortunately we were again visited by
persons seeking a five finger discount.
In the future if such activity is suspected a general announcement will
be made to alert all dealers .
A special thanks, again goes to Chuck
Collins who stepped in and assisted Jean Ann Wahl-Piotrowski in managing the
hospitality room. He also provided morning relief for the night duty
security person. Thanks also to
the many members who contributed all the good food that we happily consumed
during the show. No one went home hungry. What a great membership.
That's why we have the wonderful show that we have.
I
was pleased with the club member turn out for both set up and tear down and
especially for the Geology Student turn out Thursday noon and again Sunday
evening. Their young eager bodies were surely appreciated when the members
there were all tired.
The need for new material never ends,
especially for fossils. The pebble pond is nearly empty and the fossils that
are left are looking very shop worn and skimpy. Individual and group efforts
are necessary to replenish these required items.
The
efforts put forth by members in charge of the various show functions was again
exceptional; publicity, children’s table, silent auction, spinning wheel,
demonstrator’s, displays, admission’s, raffle, florescent booth, security,
dealer liaison, treasury and last but not least FOOD. A
special THANK YOU to all of you in charge as well as all of the members who
assisted so ably during the show..
Overall attendance was up over last year with an increase of $465.00 entrance
revenue. A final accounting cannot be
made until all bills are in and accounted for, but all indications are that the
42nd Show was a financial success as well as enjoyed by all.
ROGER
LAYLIN, General Chairman
There will be a wrap-up
Show Board meeting at the Laylins ,1770 Sandhill,
Nov._19 at 7 pm all interested members are welcome.
CHILDRENS' TOUR REPORT October 26,
2007 Mary Gowens, Children’s Tour Chair
Thanks to all who helped with the Friday morning Children’s' Tour. I hope some
of the teachers told you
how much they appreciate the "Tour." Many have told me, and I am very
pleased that the club can
offer
such a valuable program to the Lansing area educational world. Members
who brought friends, please extend my special thanks to their efforts
which
were very much needed and very much
appreciated .
I would like to thank all members and their friends who helped this year. The
volunteers were terrific.
This year attendance was better than last year in spite of the fact that two
schools canceled. Okemos had to cancel because that day was a Teacher/Parent
Conference Day. One school had several parents bring students along with the
bus. We did not get a student/teacher/parent count for the car participants.
For over one-half hour, we had over 450 children on the floor, plus teachers
and chaperones. The problem was that one school was 55 minutes late and another
arrived one-half hour early. The floor was crowded, but we had enough
volunteers to keep everything moving smoothly because I have received no
complaints about the crowd. One school came without any money. Having nothing
to do caused a few behavior problems. Any suggestions about that problem will
be appreciated.
Teachers contacted: 106 teachers. Twenty schools attended.

Library. In going through the club library there were
several publications from the state geology department that were quite dated
after talking with Milt Gere the librarian found that most of these plus new
items were now only available on line. The following is the procedure to follow
to find items on line.
Go to www.michigan.gov/deq
go to left side open LANDon left side open Geology in Michigan
in center ... find Geology in Michigan... open Digital Geology Library
Then you can tour through many types of publications and topics, open
the ones you want and download and print, etc.
Note several other areas of interest under Geology in Michigan too.
Thanks Milt for getting this information.PLACES TO GO AND THINGS TO DO
