December Program

The December program will be part business and part celebration. First we will elect officers for 2007 and then swear them into office. Then we will have several things going on at once: good holiday food (everyone bring something to share), a rocky gift exchange (if you want to get a wrapped gift, bring a wrapped gift -- a good rock, a publication, or something made out of a rock, such as jewelry or belt buckles), and rocky carols (with guitar accompaniment if our guitar player can attend). If you have something nice and glittery to display -- pyrite crystals, faceted anything, or quartz crystals -- please bring it in a display case. Come and join us for some fun!

Slate of officers to be voted on and installed.

Show Wrap-up and Thanks

From Sue Casler, Ticket Chairperson

The 2007 Show Attendance was 957 Adults and 62 Teens; a Total of 1,019 (one person less than last year).  We had 34 “Free Adult Admission w/Child Coupons” (distributed at the Friday morning Children’s Tour) used this year which was an increase of 9 from last year.

I want to thank the following folks (despite not having a sign up sheet) who helped out throughout the show to sit at the Ticket table:  Nate Krupp, Elliot Wood, Mary Gowans, Elaine Beane, Karen Kanine, Lee Laylin and Charles Hughes (thank you Charles for the extra time you put in).  We just need to figure out for next year how to get more folks in the door!!

Show Reflections

Another Show is history.  I don’t know any of the final numbers, as I’am writing from sunny Fla.  I think it was a good show.  I want to thank all of our members who brought displays.  Special KUDOS to those who did so for the first time even tho they thought “my stuff is not good enough” or “I cant do this” you all did well. Now you have 11 months to get your case ready for the 2007 Show!  I also want to give special thanks to members of other clubs who brought displays.  Our display numbers were down to 51 this year, short of our goal of 60, but there were several reasons beyond our control.  I believe displays are essential to a successful show.  I would encourage all members to plan an exhibit for 2007.  I will be happy to assist you if necessary- after I return from here.

                        CHEERS!      Neil

A Interesting aside, paging through old exchange newsletters from1989 I found a article on Sideling Hill on now interstate 68 in western Maryland. Now a exhibit  rest area at a road cut(near Exit 77)  that exposed a large syncline. If your travels take you east a stop at this rest area just west of Hancock would be interesting.

It and an article on Calvert Cliffs can be found at www. msg.md.gov/esic/brochures.com.   ED.

REMEMBER DUES ARE DUE

New books!!!!!! At the show the librarian went shopping and has added some great new book to our collection. They will be available to check out at the December meeting. Petrified Wood  by Frank J. Daniels, Ancient Forests by Frank J. Daniels, Talking Rocks by Morton & Gawboy, Lake Michigan Rock Picker’s Guide by Mueller & Gauthier, Understanding and Finding Agates by Karen Brzys and an updated and revised edition of

Mineralogy of Michigan by E.W. Heinrick. Also added two books that would make great Christmas gifts available from Schuler Books at a give away price of $5.99; The Complete Guide to Rocks & Minerals by John Farndon and The Complete Book of Dinosaurs by Dougal Dixon.

At the show Bessie Rogers reminded the editor about a poem that she had given the editor to be put in the news letter, as there is room this month, the poem by Lester Matson, 80 year old member of Chariton River Pebble Pickers Club of Russell, Iowa via Midwest Federation Safety Program via The Hammer follows. Editor wants to be sure to give credit where credit is due so the poem also says from Art Perlberg Safety Director.

Safety

My friends, I feel the time has come

At which I must prevail

Upon my fellow citizens

Both feminine and male

To walk the path of Safety

And avoid the mortuary

And perhaps for many days,

Delay your obituary.

So henceforth, kindly friends of mine,

Walk the Safety way.

But also don’t do the things I do.

Just do the things I say.

So now I’ll do the best I can

To make a set of rules

For which I’ll try to cover things

Including tricky tools.

When you are riding in a boat

Remember, do not rock it.

When changing light bulbs

Never stick your finger in the socket.

Keep your hands behind you

When you cut the grass.

Never walk bare-footed

On a piece of broken glass.

When going swimming by yourself

Be like the farmer’s daughter

Hang your clothes on a hickory limb,

But don’t go in the water

Swiftly turning wheels

Are common things about the farm

As they eagerly await

To grab your leg or arm.

Power saws can soon remove

Three fingers in a row

That takes a fellow many,

Many patient years to grow.

Don’t pile too many objects

On an overhanging shelf.

Always whittle from you

And you’ll never cut yourself.

Then there’s that good old family car,

How be it old or new,

Though it may take you fast and far-

Sees only what you do.

Never play post office

With a cobra or an adder-

I think I’d feel much safer

Walking underneath a ladder.

Though ladies with electric stoves

Have moved way up in class

One old rule that I still admire

Is—Don’t blow out the gas.

Some folks believe that accidents

Will always come in pairs.

So don’t leave Johnnie’s roller skates

Set upon the basement stairs

Don’t leave nails sticking up

In boards and things kept lying around.

Be sure electric wiring

Always has the proper ground.

When underneath your car

Give it a block upon which to rest

So if the jack should slip

The car won’t come down upon your chest.

So friends, of all these safety rules

You must be getting tired

And wish that many moons ago

This poet had expired.

So learn a little every day

And don’t become as fools,

And whether you be at work or play

Observe the Safety Rules.

How many of these rules have you ignored , much to your sorrow.  The editor can think of several that she learned the hard way. Its really hard to get a glass sliver out of your foot.
